The Artist: Rebecca Akinbiyi
Rebecca Akinbiyi is a transformative artist based in Johannesburg, South Africa, with a passion for creative expression to inspire spiritual awakening. From a young age, art offered Rebecca an escape from the mundane. She fondly recalls drawing cartoon characters with her brother and selling them for tuckshop money. Although she didn’t pursue a formal art education, her love for creating beauty remained ever-present, influencing everything she does.
It was only after deep internal reflection during covid-19 lockdown, that Rebecca made the courageous decision to leave behind a thriving corporate career in financial services and the payments industry, shifting the trajectory of her life. She transitioned to explore and unearth her true creative ability, expressing herself through floral design, custom caricature cakes, and now, spiritual textile collage art.
Her work is distinguished by its intentional use of zero paint, incorporation of waste / upcycled textiles (& African prints), reflecting a deep commitment to sustainability and environmental consciousness. Rebecca's evocative creations invite humanity into a realm of introspection and enlightenment, encouraging engagement with one’s own spiritual path.
As a self-taught artist, Rebecca combines her love of nature (especially flowers) with intuitive creativity, producing works that resonate on emotional, spiritual and intellectual levels. She believes in the power of art to touch the soul, to uplift, and to spark a life rooted in Light. Through her art, Rebecca invites others to explore the beauty and truth within. Her mission is to help others discover their own higher purpose, truth, and inner light... fostering a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness to all of Creation.

"(Be)longing to the Light" was created using remnant fabrics, old clothing, and upcycled materials, driving sustainability and intentionally avoiding paint. Through this work, I aspire to inspire a shift toward higher consciousness, reverence for Light, embody renewal and illuminate the spiritual path ‘home’.
For me, ‘home’ is more than just a place… it’s a state of being. ‘Home’ is an awakening, a return to my true, pure, noble self. It is the inner alignment with the higher realms... and drawing strength from co-existence with all that is above, for the upward journey toward the blessed abode.
At the heart of the piece is a single illuminated flower, symbolizing the threads of Light help still capable of reaching an awakened spirit. Surrounding it, other flowers narrate tales of unfulfilled potential, dimmed by humanity’s distraction, neglect and disconnection. Yet hope persists: within each flower lies the promise of radiance, if we remember our origin, our purpose, and the required balance of giving to and receiving from the Universe.
The physical artwork includes an interactive element: viewers can engage by pressing the remote, which lights up the central flower… symbolizing the conscious choice to reach toward the help from above. This simple gesture becomes a metaphor for free will… the decision to rise, to seek truth, and to walk the path of virtue and return.
"(Be)longing to the Light" invites introspection: What threads are you connected with? Are you journeying home…or drifting further away? Are you weaving with Light... or entangled in darkness?
I enjoyed creating this piece as a call for realignment... to become a beacon of light, love, truth...to encourage you to ennoble your environment through every thought, word, and deed.
